Pleistocene Epoch

Time Period:

  • 2,580,000 to 11,700 years ago
  • Time period that includes the last ice age when glaciers covered huge parts of the globe
  • Over 30% of the Earth's surface was covered by ice
The epoch also featured ice age giants, such as woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) and saber-toothed cats, many of which disappeared at the end of the Pleistocene in a major extinction event.
  • Over 11 glacial events occurred during this epoch (advances and retreats)
  • The oxygen isotope ratio during this time was O18 to O16
  • Mammals were much larger during this epoch.
  • Scientific evidence indicates that humans evolved into their present form during the Pleistocene
