THE LOUVRE
The origin of the Louvre dates back to the 1200s. Once a royal residence, it became a museum in 1793 during the French Revolution and is now home to many artworks.
THE MAIN ENTRANCE
Named after three prominent figures from French history.
The collections are displayed on 5 levels, in 3 interconnecting wings.
RICHELIEU WING
This part of the museum is named after Richelieu (1585-1642), chief minister of King Louis XIII
Treasures of the eastern mediterranean from the Levant – a historical area that covered modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan and Cyprus. The works are some of the oldest in the Louvre’s collections.
Decorative arts: from the Middle Ages through the 19th century. French paintings: Older paintings, from the 14th to the 17th century German, Flemish, and Dutch paintings Arts of Islam
The Napoleon III Apartments are an excellent example of the Louis XIV style of decor. Each room is truly a feast for the eyes, and drip in gold, gilded bronze, crystal chandeliers, and gorgeous burgundy fabrics.
SULLY WING
This part of the museum is named after Sully (1559–1641), chief minister of King Henri IV
MEDIEVAL LOUVRE
The Sully Wing is the oldest part of the Louvre. As you enter the Sully wing you are greeted by the medieval Louvre, with a walkway that takes you past old city walls. You can get a sense of the palace that was also a fortress and learn a lot about the history of the Louvre.

The Louvre’s collection of Greek and Roman antiquities was installed little by little. The process began in 1692.

DENON WING
This part of the museum is named after Denon (1747–1825), first director of the Musée du Louvre
Usually, visitors will spend the most time in the Denon wing. The reason is the La Gioconda (Mona Lisa). Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance
It has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world"
