The development of writing skills in young learners is an essential part of language. When children begin to represent their experiences and ideas by these means, they are developing abstract thinking, which is the ability to think about things that are not present at that moment.

Introduction

Writing for Young Students

Writing can be an engaging, interesting and inspiring activity for young learners. Children are active learners and thinkers (Piaget 1965)

The writing

Writing is a complex skill to develop and master. Writing skills only develop when young learners are taught how to write and are given opportunities to practice these skills and strategies.

It allows for a high degree of personalisation and creativity.

Why we need to develop writing skills with young learners

Writing skills equip young learners with a solid base for future development and learning.

Teachers can diagnose learners’ strengths and areas to develop in terms of vocabulary, structure, spelling etc.

Writing allows young learners to practise new vocabulary and structures.

It provides young learners to take risks and try out new language, with more “thinking time.”

Focusing on this area can instil the joy of writing from an early age.

The end goal the accuracy of the content and accuracy of the text.

Accuracy focuses on:

  • Grammar and vocabulary
  • Spelling and punctuation
  • Legibility and appropriate genre conventions

Content focuses on:

  • Conveying information successfully to the reader
  • Providing enough detailed information
  • Logically ordering ideas
  • Using appropriate register
  • Originality of ideas

" It is the teacher’s responsibility to develop writing tasks for young learners that are enjoyable, full of practice, meaningful, purposeful, social and supported "

-(Reid 1998).

Text Types and Different Styles of Writing

There are many different ways to categorize the broad range of reading and writing materials we can encounter in a single day. But, generally speaking, it’s helpful to think of them in terms of two overarching and broad categories: factual and literary.

LITERARY TEXTS

FACTUAL TEXTS

ENDEAVOR TO INFORM, INSTRUCT, OR PERSUADE THROUGH THE USE OF FACTS AND INFORMATION.

SEEK TO ENTERTAIN, ENLIGHTEN, OR ELICIT EMOTION THROUGH A CREATIVE USE OF LANGUAGE AND STRUCTURE.
