Positive Predictive Value
False Positive Rate (FPR)
Positive Predictive Value (PPV)
Prevelance of Disease
The likelyhood a patient who tested postive for a disease actually has it. A "true positive".
The proportion of people in a population who have a specifice disease at a specified time.
The percentage of people who tested positive for a disease when they do not have it
What This Implies:
What This Means:
Because PPV is altered by prevalence, which varies based on time and region when statistics were recorded (i.e. during a pandemic, vulnerable populations), the same PPV cannot be applied to different regions/populations. Because no test is foolproof, the patient should follow up with further testing to confirm the diagnosis.
PPV = True Pos/(True Pos + False Pos) TP and FP are influenced by prevalence (rate of infection) which varies due to a multitude of factors such as location and occupation. Should you test positive, there is a 2% chance (PPV) that you actually have the disease.
