What is a natural disaster?

What is a natural disaster?

DEFINITION OF

Natural Disaster

A natural disaster is any calamitous occurrence generated by the effects of a natural, rather than human-driven, incident that produces great loss of human life or destruction of the natural environment, private property, or public infrastructure.

Tornado

Hurricane

Cyclone

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air touching the ground, usually attached to the base of a thunderstorm.

A hurricane is a type of storm called a tropical cyclone, which forms over tropical or subtropical waters.

A cyclone is a general term for a weather system in which winds rotate inwardly to an area of low atmospheric pressure.

volcano

earthquake

landslide

A volcano is an opening in the earth's crust through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases escape.

An earthquake is an intense shaking of Earth's surface. The shaking is caused by movements in Earth's outermost layer.

A landslide is defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope.

famine and drought

extreme temperature

wildfire

A wildfire is an unplanned fire that burns in a natural area such as a forest, grassland, or prairie.

The condition that arrives due to long term and severe scarcity of food grains is called famine. Drought is the deficiency of rainfall over an extended period.

A general term for temperature variations above (extreme heat) or below (extreme cold) normal conditions.

extreme precipitation

tsunami

flooding

Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea. They speed along as fast as jet planes.

Or "heavy precipitation" refers to instances during which the amount of rain or snow experienced in a location substantially exceeds what is normal.

A flood is an overflow of water (or rarely other fluids) that submerges land that is usually dry.
