Heritage day is a cultural fair which showcases South Africa's living heritage. It's a public holiday and it celebrates the true meaning of why South Africans call themselves the Rainbow Nation.
The most famous food for Heritage Day is Braai food. Braai is a barbecue of meat and vegetables over wood. Boerewors are very popular which are sausages of beef, pork and lamb.
Some South Africans wear traditional indigenous outfits and dance traditional dances. Some visit heritage sites and others gather at stadiums for a day of celebrations which includes music, dance, food and speeches by political leaders.
Today, Heritage Day encourages South Africans to come together to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and diversity of the nation.
