The Hadean Eon

Named after Hades, the Greek Lord of the Underworld, the Hadean Eon is the earliest eon in geological time. It lasted from 4.6 to 4 billion years ago.

  • Earth was still 'fresh out of the oven'.
  • It was very hot with oceans of lava.
  • Lightning strikes occurred during this time.
  • It was not uncommon for comets and meteors to strike the earth.

  • No fossils were found.
  • However, there was evidence of biogenic carbon which is defined as carbon that was once used by and part of living things.
  • This could mean that there was life (possibly microscopic) back then.

  • The formation of the moon
  • The Earth's core (as it is today) was forming.

  • Zircons have been found dating to this eon.
  • A lot of important minerals such as boron and phosphorus might have formed during this time.
  • The magnetic field was just developing.
