M- Months

Months of the year are capitalized! So are days of the week!

Example: My birthday is in September!

  • Capitalize: January
  • Capitalize: Christmas
  • Capitalize: Friday
  • Do NOT capitalize: fall
  • Do NOT capitalize: winter

Days of the week, months of the year, and holidays

NOT seasons

Directions that are names

Do not capitalize: Drive north to my house. Do capitalize if "the" comes before it because it is now a proper noun: I live in the Northwest.

NOT compass directions

I- "I" when by itself

When the pronoun "I" is by itself, it is always capitalized!

Example: My sister is a runner, but I prefer swimming.

N- Names

Names of people, places, things, holidays, and historical events. These are called proper nouns.

Examples: People: My best friend is Molly. Places: The Grand Canyon is beautiful. Things (brand names): My favorite brand of paper towels is Bounty. Holidays: I dress up for Halloween every year. Historical event: The Great War later became known as World War I.

T- Titles

Titles of books, movies, shows, songs, and poems Titles of people as well

Examples: Books: Charlotte's Web is one of my favorite books! Movies: The Star Wars movies have remained popular. Poems: "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" was a poem turned into a song! People: I live closer to Grandma Betty than my other grandma. Do not capitalize a title unless it is used as a proper noun. For example, "Grandma Betty" is capitalized because it includes the name, and "Grandma" by itself is also capitalized when used as a name. However, if you're saying, "My grandma is visiting," it is not capitalized because it is being used as a common noun.

Do not capitalize the small words (and, the, of are lowercase) : My favorite book is, Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban. Caitalize all important words: My favorite book is, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Do NOT leave the first word uncapitalized: Tomorrow I will read, the Cat In The Hat No matter what, capitalize the first word of the title: Tomorrow I will read, The Cat in the Hat

Major words in titles

Do not capitalize: I like when my uncle makes smoothies! Do capitalize: I like when Uncle Bob makes smoothies! Do not capitalize: I want to be the president someday! Do capitalize: I saw President Biden today! Do not capitalize: I love my mom. Do capitalize: Mom, I need help! Do not capitalize: Joe is the mayor in our town. Do capitalize: I saw Mayor Joe in town!

Titles of people

Only when used as a proper name.

S- Sentence Beginnings

The first word of your sentence is always capitalized.

Examples: Ice cream before bed is a nice treat!
