I do not wish [women] to have power over men; but over themselves
Mary WollstonecraftIn Great Britain woman suffrage was first advocated by Mary Wollstonecraft in her book "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" (1792)
BACKGROUND_
Conditiond and rights of Women(19th century)
The stereotype of the Victorian gentle lady became unacceptable and even intolerable! Upper-class women could exert a little backstage political influence in high society. And...THE OTHERS RIGHTS?
Status
Child custody
Careers
Divorce
By the end of the nineteenth century, women had secured equality of status in most spheres – except of course for the VOTE and the holding of office.
BRITISH WOMEN'S VOTING RIGHTS
In Britain, in the 19th century women could not vote in PARLIAMENTARY elections.
In 1894 only married women could vote in local ELECTIONS!
Many women all over Europe had tried to defend their rights. In Scotland, England, France, and Ireland they often had the society, their families, politicians and the Press against them, portraying women in a very derogative and disrespectful way.
Those rebels were called SUFFRAGETTES!

Why women wanted to vote (dare we ask)?
The WSPU (Women’s Social and Political Union)
The Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) was a women-only political movement and leading militant organisation campaigning for women's suffrage in the United Kingdom from 1903 to 1918. The WSPU membership became known for civil disobedience and direct action. Group members heckled politicians, held demonstrations and marches, broke the law to force arrests, broke windows in prominent buildings and committed a series of arsons that killed at least five people and injured at least 24. Suffragettes was also the colloquial name of the women members of the WSPU.

WHO WERE THESE SUFFRAGETTES?
The word “suffragettes”, although with a French consonance actually originated from England in 1903, from the word SUFFRAGE (vote). _ Suffragettes often came from educated background, sometimes from aristocratic families but were joined on occasion by the working class. _ In the UK, they were seen as a potential threat and dealt with in a very dismissive and disrespectful manner, imprisoned and tortured by force feeding. This changed when women from all class backgrounds started to unite.
There are a lot of famous suffraggettes. We can know something about:
Emmeline Pankhurst
VOTESforWOMEN!
Emily Davison
THE MEN'S POINT OF VIEW
The majority of men opposed the idea of allowing women to vote, and anti-suffrage cartoons depicted suffragists as ugly, scolding shrews set on emasculating mankind. However, a number of leading male politicians and left-wing intellectuals supported the women's cause, and the Men's League for Women's Suffrage was founded in 1907. The Men’s Political Union for Women’s Enfranchisement was also founded in 1910, as a militant society - a male counterpart to the WSPU.

THE PRESS: In support or against the suffraggettes
In UK, what the Press or other publications had to say about it at the time? The fight for suffrage was an important movement for women, and the press proved valuable to the cause. Both male and female journalists wrote IN SUPPORT of suffrage and AGAINST IT. These publications strove to inform and to motivate and are a lasting testimony to those who spoke out for equality.
