FREEDMEN AND FREEDWOMEN

The act of freeing an enslaved people was called manumissio. Manussion was performed in several ways. The oldest mothod took the form of a legal cerimony before a public official, such as judge

Some feedmen continued to do the same work they did when enslad or were set up in business by those who previously held them in enslavement;others becxame priests in the temples or worked for the town.

Freedwomen

A woman who had been freed from enslavement was called a liberta.

Like freedmen, many feedwomen earned their living using the skills they had learnt while enslaved. Some stayed in the house where they had been enslaved and may have worked as hairdresser, seamstresses or nurses.

Roman's family

Some freedwomen married men who had previously had them in enslavemrnt. Families might contain a mixture of free and enslaved people.
