Family Systems Model
A family system model is a concept of the mesosystem in which home, school, neighborhood, and peers interact with one another. This model includes communication and interaction patterns. This system helps understand the the functioning on interaction between people in a family or peers.
My Culture
I was born in Florida but raised up in North Dallas. I am Mexican- American, both of my parents are from Mexico. They come from a very small town in Hidalgo, Mexico. Being raised from Mexican parents has been great, but it has been rough as well. I grew up in a Hispanic community where many of the families lived in a low-income home including me. My parents worked day and night to provide our basic needs just like other families. Many families work very hard to honor and give their families the best.
Preconceptions
My preconception of culturally and linguistically in diverse students is we will receive many students from different backgrounds or cultures and it is important to take in consideration of the students, especially with language. In my classroom I will do my best to communicate with families even through the language barrier. I know for sure that in my classroom I will have students who are English learners and will need help to learn the language. As a teacher I will provide the resources that my students will need to help them be successful in class and have an outstanding academic performance.
Family Engagement: Beginning of the Year
Hosting an open house can help teachers interact with parents and build a relationship. Parents can meet the teacher and take the opportunity to ask questions or concerns. Students can also meet the teacher so they have an idea of who will be their teacher and learn about their classroom.
Host an Open House
- Provide an introductory powerpoint about who I am and the goals I have for my classroom.
- Provide flyers with dates of field trips and opportunities to volunteer.
- Inform important events happening throughout the school year.
Family Engagement: Middle of the Year
- Parent conference: I can plan a parent conference to discuss about the student academic performance.
- Host Family Night where families can come to the classroom and see the students class work and performance. Snacks and drinks would be provided for the families.
- Cultural Night is a great event where each student can bring a dish that is known in their family culture.
Family Engagement: End of the Year
Family Fitness Night This event can promote students and family to be involve in physical or outdoor activities. It promotes interaction between families and teacher which can be enjoyable and pleasurable.
Host an Award Ceremony
Awarding the students for their academic success throughout the year can be a great event to motivate the students to continue doing well in school and for the students to celebrate with their family. Snacks, ice cream, and drinks will be provided along with other activities.
Family Engagement Plan Event
Movie Night
Students will vote for the movie they will like to watch and their families will be welcome to come over to watch it together. Time: The event will be held on a Friday night from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Materials: - Movie - Hot dogs - popcorn - chips - Soft drinks and juice - lankees (students will bring their own) Measuring Success : Before the night ends, I will thank every family and student for coming over and hope they had a wonderful evening. - --
