WATER CRISIS :

IN ZIMBABWE , AFRICA

CLIMATE:

The country experiences its rainy season along with relatively high temperatures from October to March; and it encounters dry seasons with low temperatures from June to August. After the dry and cold season, the average temperature of the country ranges between 15°C and 25°C

POPULATION:

15.99 MILLION
About 62% of the population in Southern Africa and over 68% in Zimbabwe, rely on groundwater as their primary source of drinking water and for multiple uses.
MAIN WATERSOURCE:
WATER PROBLEMS:
  • Water has become a daily struggle in Zimbabwe’s second biggest city, largely the result of a severe drought last year which has dried up the reservoirs.
  • A drive along the streets of Sizinda follows a trail of desperation, as women and children clutching water buckets search for water.
  • Currently, in the city of Harare’s greater metropolitan area has about 4.5 million people, more than half of whom have no access to clean water and are at risk of water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
Water quality:
Most surface water and some groundwater resources in Zimbabwe need to be treated before they can be deemed safe for human consumption.
Efforts being made:
  • An organization called UNICEF making an effort to increase access to water by drilling new boreholes and rehabilitating defunct pipe water schemes and boreholes in rural focus districts with a strong focus on solar power.
  • Between 2017 and 2021, An organization called World Vision, with the support of its partners, drilled 207 new boreholes and established 201 solar-powered piped water schemes in schools, communities and health care facilities in 20 Districts of Zimbabwe.
