Introduction

Who knows how a butterfly gets their wings? Well, did you know that a butterfly is actually a caterpillar first? They soend half of their lives as wingless insects before transforming into a butterfly Today we will be learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly, and how they go from a caterpillar to a butterfly!

1.Book - Butterfly House by Eve Bunting. Illustrated by Greg Shed. 2.Construction paper (assorted colors) 3.Paper plate 4.Raw pasta (rice = eggs, mafalda (bite size lasagna) = caterpillar 5.Shells = chrysalis, bow tie (farfalle) = butterfly 6.Leaves (small) 7.Twigs (small) 8.Glue 9.Paint brushes (to spread glue) 10.Cups (to hold glue) 11.Life cycle figures (eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly)

Lets make the life cycle!

The teacher will show the students how they will make their own life cycle of a butterfly. First students will fold the piece of paper/paper plate into four equal parts. In the upper left corner will be stage one (egg). They will then put stage two (caterpillar) in the upper right corner. The third stage (chrysalis) will go in the lower right corner and finally the fourth stage (butterfly) in the lower left corner. They will then draw arrows showing the progression of the stages. Once the students have finished they will turn their work into the teacher.
