CHOOSING A SPECIALTY
Jill Chan has just graduated from medical school and is talking about her future."I haven't decided what to specialize in yet. I need more experience before I decide, but I'd certainly prefer to work with children than, say, elderly patients - so I don't fancy geriatrics. I was never very interested in detailed anatomy, so surgical specialties like neurosurgery don't really appeal. You have to be good with your hands, which I don't think is a problem for me - I've assisted at operations several times, and I've even done some minor ops by myself - but surgeons have to be able to do the same thing again and again without getting bored, like tying off cut arteries and so on. I don't think that would be a problem for me, but they need to make decisions fast and I'm not too good at that. I like to have time to think, which means surgery's probably not right for me.
Last week I read an article about "Core Medical Specialties in the UK" which states that specialties like ophthalmology are seriously needed in the country since there are just two professionals for every 100,000 individuals. Oncologists are also in high demand because there are so many different forms of cancer hence different fields of oncology for specialists to get into. However, one really caught my attention and it was child psychiatry, they work with children and young adults who suffer from poor mental health, helping them to overcome their trauma, manage their symptoms, adopt healthy coping strategies, and generally improve their mental health and their outlook on life. Therefore, I am considering medical specialties that align with my interests and strengths. My mother is a hematologist and my father is a cardiologist and I am just so fascinated about their passion for their job that I want to make the right choice and pursue my real passion."

the following vaccinations are recommended for travellers to south Asia
HEPATITIS A OR IMMUNE GLOBULIN (IG) Transmission of hepatitis A virus can occur through direct person-to-person contact; through exposure to contaminated water, ice, or shellfish harvested in contaminated water; or from uncooked fruits, vegetables, or other foods. HEPATITIS B Especially if you might be exposed to blood or body fluids (for example, health-care workers), have sexual contact with the local population, or be exposed through medical treatment. JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS If you plan to visit rural farming areas and under special circumstances, such as a known outbreak of Japanese encephalitis.
MALARIA Your risk of malaria may be high in these countries, including cities. Travelers should take an effective antimalarial drug. RABIES If you might have extensive, unprotected outdoor exposure in rural areas. TYPHOID Typhoid fever can be contracted through contaminated drinking water or food. Large outbreaks are most often related to fecal contamination of water supplies or foods sold by street vendors. Vaccination is particularly important because of the presence of S. Typhi strains resistant to multiple antibiotics in this region. AS NEEDED Booster doses for tetanus, diphtheria, and measles, and a one-time dose of polio for adults.
