South Island

Is 151,215 square kilometres. It is more mountainus than North Island. The Souther Alps is a mountain range that starts in the nort of South Island and finishes in the south. Mount Cook is in the southern Alps. It is 3.754 metres high, and it is the highest mountain in New Zeland. Fiordland is the countrys largest national park. You can see mountains, glaciers, valleys and lakes in the park. It is very popular with climbers and hikers.

Kiwi

Is a flightless bird with a very long beak. A kiwi is about the same size as a chiken. But a kiwis egg is six times larger than a chikens egg! The male kiwi incubates the egg and looks after it for about 80 days . 80 days! That the longest incubation period of any bird in the world.

Takahe

The South Island takehe swine is a species of gruiform bird in the family Radillade ,related to the common swine, and endemic to New Zealand.Is in danger of extinction.

The Bluetooth penguin

Lives in many parts of New Zeland. There are 17 species of penguin in the world, and many of them live in New Zeland. The blue penguin has goot blue-grey feathers and it is the smallest species of penguin. It is a bout 30cm long and it weighs about 1 kilogram.
