UNITED NATIONS After the devastation of world War II, the United Nations are created with the mission of maintaining international peace and security. Today, 193 countries (including all 27 EU member states) are members, which is almost every country in the world.

THE END OF WORD WAR TWOWorld war II ends in Europe. Millions of people around the world celebrate ''Victory in Europe Day''which marks the end of the bloodiest military conflict in history in which 60 milion people died.

THE BEGINNING OF THE SPACE AGE

Building on the success of the coal and steel treaty, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxemburg and the Netherlands expand cooperation to other economic sectors. They sign the Treaties of Rome, creating the EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (Euratom), and the EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY or "common market" (EEC).

4 october 1957 the space age begins when the Soviet Union lanchess Sputnik1, a satelite the size of a basketball, into orbit.

EUROPEAN SOCIAL FUND

On 25 March 1957 the EUROPEAN SOCIAL FUND was funded with the aim of improvin job opportunities and raising standard of living. Today is an important driver of job creation, promoting better education and more modern public administration, and help to improve living standard for children and their families

Denmark, Ireland and the UK become part of the EU. This is the first of many enlargements of the the EU. After this, goals of union and integration amongst member counties apply to more than just the original six. This enlargement marks the start of the issues and benefits associated with European Union. After a referendum, Norway decides not to join.

EU Environment Action Programme European Community leaders adopt the first Environment Action Programme based on the idea that preventing pollution is important. The fight against pollution intensifies in the 1970s with the rise of the environmental movement and the first political parties based on green principles, which include environmentalism, social justice and non-violence.

Golf: first Team Europe in Ryder Cup

First European Elections

For the first time, European citizens can vote for who they want to represent them in the European Parliament. Before the introduction of direct elections, MEPs were appointed by the national parliaments of each Member State. The European elections have been held every 5 years since then. You have the right to vote at 18 in all EU countries except Austria, Malta (16), and Greece (17).

Continental Europeans compete for the first time in the Ryder Cup golf tournament. Before 1979, the matches were played between teams from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. Spain’s Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido were the first continental golfers to join ‘Team Europe’.

The collapse of communism across central and eastern Europe, which begins in Poland and Hungary, is symbolised by the fall of the Berlin Wall. The German Democratic Republic opens its borders. The 1st January 1989 British engineer and computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invents the ‘World Wide Web’ (‘www’). The world’s first website is launched on 6 August 1991.

Treaty of Maastricht

The Treaty of Maastricht is what creates the EU. It has some important new aims for the member countries, for example about security and it goes on developing the old goals. Furthermore, this treaty changes the structure of the EU by organizing it into the "three pillars" - the community pillar, the foreign and security pillar, and the pillar of police and judicial cooperation. The Treaty of Maastricht is the official start of the EU.

The EU estbilishes the "Natura 2000" network witch offers a heaven to Europe's thratened wildlife species and habitats. stretching over 18% of the EU's land area and almost 6% of its marine territory. It is the largest coordinate network of protected areas in the world.
