The Two Ways Europeans took direct control of lands outside of Europe
Tropical dependencies
“Tropical dependencies” were colonies in which a few Europeans ruled many indigenous native people in places like Africa, Asia & the South Pacific. This typically was because Europeans disliked living in the heat, and tropical diseases didn't help much either. So, while there was a European military & administrative presence, the cooperation of native elites was very important.

Settlement colonies themselves had two distinctions- "white dominions" like Canada & Australia were inhabited mostly by Europeans & their descendants & had few indigenous people (theses colonies moved toward self-government & parliamentary rule during the 19th century); the second variation were “contested settler colonies” that grouped territories where large European populations lived among even more numerous indigenous peoples like South Africa, Algeria, New Zealand, & Kenya (these colonies saw European & indigenous peoples clash continuously over control of local resources while battling questions of social or cultural differences).
