Women In War

Women helped out during the war, in many different ways. Whether it was fighting in the war, or just staying at home and growing vegetables in your garden. There were many ways to help out.

Over 6.1 million women were working in paid employment. Some women served in uniform as well as in the royal navy and royal air force. Even Women in more traditional roles contributed to the war effort. They would grow food in their backyards, limit their consumption of meat, can food for future use, etc. Women also worked as doctors, nurses, and ambulance drivers.

Women also took over jobs that men usually did, since they were out in war. Women worked as conductresses (and occasionally drivers) on buses, trams and underground trains. Between 1914 and 1918, an estimated two million women took on jobs which had been previously been filled by men. Once the war was over, Women got the right to vote in Canada in 1917, in Britain, Germany, and Poland in 1918, and in Austria and the Netherlands in 1919. A new Tactic

Germany was the first country to use chemical weapons during the war. The French used small amounts of tear gas in police operations, but never in war. The first experience of chemical weapons was when Germans placed some small tear-gas canisters in shells that were fired at France, but allied troops were not exposed.

Known as the Second Battle of Ypres, the germans used chlorine gas to gas out nearly 4 miles of their opponents territory. This decimated nearly half of France’s troops. This had a big effect in ww1, because it introduced poison gas as an attack. The British started developing their own chemical weapons, With countries getting used to the gas attacks, they started to produce gas masks for soldiers to wear.
