Parashah
Yitro “Jethro”
Exodus 18:1-20-:23
Points:
Yitro visits moshe
Moshe appoints judges
Israel at Sinai
The 10 Mitzvot
In this Torah Portion, we learn that the father-in-law of Moses, Jethro, gives Moses some organizational advice on how to judge cases among the people of Israel. Then we will read about the Israelites reaching Mount Sinai. The parashah will concludes with Israel receiving the Ten Commandments.
Key points:
- This Torah portion describes Y_ love towards the gentiles.
- This parashah is exceedingly kind; it is written for a Gentile who want to embrace Y_'s Torah.
- Yitro serves as a prophecy of future events.
Exodus 18:17-19
Moses' father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone. Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you…”
Lesson:
Jethro goes on to tell Moses that he is to represent the people before Y_ and teach them Y_’s laws
Moses should establish qualified leaders of integrity over groups within Israel to judge “small matters”
The Torah doesn’t say why Y_ directed Jethro to advise Moses instead of instructing Moses directly.
(18:19-20)
(18:21-22)
Maybe the reason Y_ used Jethro was to remind Moses—and us—to remain humble. No matter howmuch we’ve learned, we could always learn more. We could always be corrected and shown a better way—even by those we might not expect to have worthwhile advice!
Moses handles the “great matters”
(18:22)
HEAR! OIR! SHEMA!
Exodus 18:1 Moses’ father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard about everything that God had done for Moses and His people Israel, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.
Yitro was not just any person:
Yitro was going to have a huge impact on countless numbers of people.
Had a high rank
Yethro, the priest of Midian
Humbleness
Despite his status as a prince, he was humble.
Yitro experienced a transformation and renounced all pagan deities and idolatry as he began the process of becoming born again.
Exodus 18:12
Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father-in-law in God’s presence.
Holocaust: destroys the animal entirely. It is a sacrifice for ascension, much as the sacrifice of Corban, and its purpose is to ascend to Y_ as a pleasing scent. Sacrifice: They celebrated the shalom sacrifice; they ate together in delight out of gratitude to Y_ for yitro's conversion.
Holocaust: burn the old manSacrifice: represents my life in return for his sacrifice

Haftarah Yitro "Jethro"
Isaiah 6:1-13
Isaiah 6:1-13
6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and His robe[a] filled the temple. 2 Seraphim[b] were standing above Him; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts; His glory fills the whole earth. 4 The foundations of the doorways shook at the sound of their voices, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 Then I said: Woe is me for I am ruined[c] because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts. 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed and your sin is atoned for. 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying: Who should I send?Who will go for Us? I said: Here I am. Send me. 9 And He replied: Go! Say to these people: Keep listening, but do not understand; keep looking, but do not perceive. 10 Dull the minds[d] of these people; deafen their ears and blind their eyes; otherwise, they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their minds, turn back, and be healed. 11 Then I said, “Until when, Lord?” And He replied: Until cities lie in ruins without inhabitants, houses are without people, the land is ruined and desolate, 12 and the Lord drives the people far away, leaving great emptiness in the land. 13 Though a tenth will remain in the land, it will be burned again. Like the terebinth or the oak that leaves a stump when felled, the holy seed is the stump.
