Characteristics - Islamic aquitecture

Islamic architecture combines a variety of artistic traditions from the reaches of Islamic empires into structures designed using characteristics common to Islamic culture in general. These characteristics include a focus on the interior of structures, with elaborate decoration in geometric rather than organic forms. Physical characteristics include domes, arches, minarets, muqarnas vaulting, and girih tiles.

INTERIOR OF THE mosque of cÓRDOBA

The great Mosque consists of two distinct areas, the porticoed patio or sahn, where the minaret stands (under the Renaissance tower), the only intervention by Abd al-Rahman III, and the prayer room or haram. The interior space is arranged on a concert of columns and two-tone arcades with a great chromatic effect.

Originally, the entire interior of the building was a large hypostyle room, used as a prayer room, with the sole exception of the rooms in the double wall of the qibla. Apart from its religious use, which included the five daily prayers and the Friday special, the hall was also used as an educational and sharia center during the government of Abderramán I and his successors.

CHaracteristics - GOTHIC Arquitecture

Gothic architecture's defining features are pointed arches, rib vaults, buttresses, and extensive use of stained glass. Combined, these features allowed the creation of buildings of unprecedented height and grandeur, filled with light from large stained glass windows. Flourished from the late 12th until the mid-17th century. The style was most prominently used in the construction of cathedrals and churches.

GOTHIC ART - EXAMPLE

Notre-Dame de paris

Construction of the cathedral began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely completed by 1260. Several of its attributes set it apart from the earlier Romanesque style, particularly its pioneering use of the rib vault and flying buttress, its enormous and colourful rose windows, and the naturalism and abundance of its sculptural decoration.

It's located in France, Paris. Its length reaches about 128m, width is around 48m , naves reach about 35m, towers reaches about 69 metres and the spire height is 91.44m.

INTERIOR OF NOTRE- DAME CATEDRAL

Many people may not know that three relics of Christ are kept in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris: the Crown of Thorns, a fragment of the Cross of Calvary and one of the nails that served to fix Christ on the Cross.

The interior of the cathedral stands out for its luminosity, thanks to the large windows that open in the head, the clerestory, the clerestory and the side naves. Great originality and audacity are the cylindrical pillars that separate the spaces of the naves. Contrary to what was done later in most Gothic buildings, they were designed as giant columns, without beams or attached columns. The vaults and the tracery of the windows show simple designs, as corresponds to the initial phase of the Gothic in which they were projected.
