ISLAMIC ART

Islamic art fused the main features of the art of the peoples they conquered, creating their own artistic style. Islamic art was based mainly on architecture. They built mosques, palaces, madrasas and caravanserais. They used poor materials (plaster, bricks... ) and used columns, pillars and arches. Flat wooden roofs and vaults were used to cover buildings. For decoration they used geometric motifs (lacery), plants (ataurique) and inscriptions. They also used stained glass and tiles (to create games of light and shadow)In addition, water was an aesthetic element.

LA ALHAMBRA DE GRANADA

ALHAMBRA

The Alhambra was built in the 14th and 15th centuries in Granada, Spain. It was a group of buildings formed by the fortress or citadel and the palaces of the Nasrid kings. The alhambra was organized in two spaces:

  • The public space. It was the area in which the king exercised his government functions.
  • Private dependences. They formed the area in which the king, his family, and his servants lived. It was around the Court of the Lions.

characteristics of the Alhambra

Some of the materials that were used to build the alhambra were:

  • Marble (was used to make columns and slabs)
  • Stone (it was used to make fountains, walls and large gates)
  • Wood (was used in some roofs)

El Patio de los Leones

"El patio de los Leones"is the main courtyard of the Alhambra and is located in the center of this. In the center of the courtyard there is a big fountain, surrounded by 12 lions (these symbolize the 12 tribes of Israel).

Gothic art

GOTHIC ART

Gothic art is an artistic style that predominated in religious architecture, sculpture, and painting in Europe between the 12th and 15th centuries, until the rise of the Renaissance cultural movement.

In gothic art new techniques arose:

  • The pointed arch was used (which exerted less weight on the wall)
  • The ribbed vault (its weight rested on the pillars)
  • The pillars were reinforced on the outside with buttresses and flying buttresses.
  • In the architecture they also used huge windows, stained glass and rose windows
