Mindfulness can help students achieve both academically and socially. It allows them to regulate their emotions and remain focused. Educators should focus on implementing moments of mindfulness into daily routines.

What methods of mindfulness have you tried? In what ways have you seen success? If you have not implemented mindfulness, what is one way you plan to in the future?

Metacognition is helping students think about their own thoughts. It helps boost self-esteem and navigate away from negative self-talk. Metacognition helps with communication skills.

Intentional metacognition strategies can assist students in self-regulation and reflection of given content. Activities such as think-pair-share, qualify as metacognition. Educators should implement a growth mindset in students.

What metacognition strategies have you tried? What have you found to be most successful and why?

Problem solving skills are not only important in early education. It sets up future success in all aspects of life. Students can use problem solving skills in academic and social areas.

How have you implemented problem-solving skills within your classroom? What do you do when students lack a growth mindset?

Project-based learning is student-centered; focusing on working in teams, critical thinking, and applying relevant content. Students are encouraged to articulate their thinking and explain their reasoning. Project-based learning benefits students by using real-world concepts.

Project-based learning examples include: blog posts, presentations, posters, or flyers. Think of new and creative ways for students to show their learning. Project-based assignments can be done individually or in groups.

What is one project-based learning assignment you could implement tomorrow? What would interest your students the most?

"Differentiated teaching occurs when a teacher plans a lesson that adjusts either the content being discussed, the process used to learn or the product expected from students to ensure that learners at different starting points can receive the instruction they need to grow and succeed" (Victoria State Government: Department of Education, 2019).

Some differentiation strategies include: graphic organizers, small group instruction, stations, choice grids, and learning menus. While it includes strategies, it is also a philosophy of effective teaching. Educators can even apply differentiation into whole group instruction.

Personalized learning meets individual student needs. It encompases academic skill, social-emotional development, and physical development. Technology is one way to create personalized learning for students.

One way educators can meet the needs of diverse learners is by developing healthy student-teacher relationships. These relationships contribute to the wellbeing of students. When students feel this connection with their teachers, they feel comfortable going to them for support.

These components lend to the healthy development of all students. When thinking of how we can support students, especially those who have been affected by trauma, these ideas and strategies will promote student success.
