Curriculum Mapping

  • Long-term overview that covers what should be taught throughout the entire school year.
  • Should be a system-wide process that includes the entire district to ensure continuity of instruction, for example, what is taught in a science Kindergarten class throughout the year so that Kindergarten content can be continued to build upon in first grade and so on.
  • Is a reflective process to help individuals understand what will be taught, how it will be taught, and how learning targets were assessed.
  • Can be used as a planning tool for future instruction.
Example:

Pacing Guides

  • A pacing guide is a tool used to plan week-by-week written to meet the course standards.
  • Course objectives should be divided by the number of weeks the class will take. Then, units and lessons can be assigned to each week.
  • Several learning targets should be accomplished each week.
  • Course objectives should be prioritized so that enough time is allocated for the activities needed for essential material.
  • Flexibility should be included within the schedule to allow for inclement weather, and sickness, however, should also take into consideration student achievement. Some topics may take longer than anticipated due to learner retention.
Example:

      Lesson Plans

      • An outline that details what will be taught, how it will be taught, and what resources will be used to teach it.
      • Most lesson plans cover a single day or another short time period, such as a week.
      • Effective plans share the following key components:
      -Lesson Objectives-Materials-Learning Activities-Time Requirements-Related Requirements- Assessment-Evaluation and Reflection
      • Lesson plans promote daily organization and classroom management. Routine is key!
