WORLD WAR 1
SURVIVE THE TRENCH
Start
Intro
During WW1, trenches were dug to keep enemies from moving forward. Soldiers also rested and lived in the trenches during wartime. It is estimated that 2,490 kilometers long of trench were dug. They were around 1-2 meters wide and 3 meters tall. While they were successful sometimes, trenches posed many struggles and dangers for the men living in them, including pests, weather, enemy attacks, and disease. Can you surve the trench? Or will you fall under the same path as the many soldiers who lost their life due to trench warfare?

You're haven't eaten for days after a long stretch of battle, and you sit down to rest in the trench. As you go to grab a meal, you see an oversized rat run past. Its followed by a few more, but all of a sudden a bug flies in your face and you lose track of them. It's possible they were just running around, but what if they had scavenged through your food? You could get very sick, but your so hungry... What will you do?
Soliders weren't the only ones who lived in the trenches. Pests including rats, mice, lice, and frogs occupied the space. These made living conditions uncomfortable and dangerous. Some of the animals ate soldiers food, while others spread disease. Trench Fever came from lice and caused itchiness, headaches, fever, sore muscles, and joint pain, disabling many of the soldiers for weeks to months at a time. Pests made the trenches dirty, sickening, and forced men to be careful of what they eat.
Skip this meal.
Examine the food closely and then eat it.
Just eat, you're so hungry!
Correct! Take your meal.

When it rained it often got muddy and flooded in the trenches, so soldiers had a hard time moving around or engaging in battle. Exposure to these conditions resulted in trench foot, which is when the tissue of your feet dies. Often soldiers would get their feet amputated because of this condition. During the winter, soldiers would have their toes and fingers amputated as well because of frostbite. Cold weather also killed some people who were left without warmth.
The date is January 3rd. You've just been told you need to get out of the trench for battle ASAP. It's frigid out and you aren't properly dressed. But, your lieutenant will get mad if you're not out for battle in the next few seconds. What should you do?
Bundle up and head out.
Get out there!
Stay inside the trench.
You survived harsh weather conditions!

Each night, soliders would trade off every few hours for watch duty. You are currently awake making sure nobody is coming to fight. All of a sudden, you hear some noise coming towards you. You're not sure if this is the enemy or not, and you know other men would be very upset if you woke them. What should you do?
Opposite forces would sneak up on trenches in the middle of the night and kill many soldiers. Then, they would circle their opponents and attack. The Battle of Somme is a popular example of this danger when the Germans snuck up on the allied troops and killed almost 20,000 men in the first hour.
Go towards the noise and see what it is.
Wake up the rest of the force.
Sit still and hope it's not the enemy.
You survived enemy attacks!

You've been in war for some time now and you are starting to become good friends with a few of the other soldiers. You spend a lot of time with one in particular, however you've noticed he's beginning to be always exhausted and in pain even while you're resting. This soldier helps you through your "shell-shock," and without him you are afraid you will struggle much more. It is important you stay healthy, and it is very possible he has caught a deadly disease... What will you do?
Since soldiers lived so close together in unsanitary conditions, disease spread very fast. Diseases included dysentery, typhoid fever, and cholera. People also suffered from mental diseases, like “shell-shock” (now known as PTSD) due to the trauma of warfare. Some “trench” diseases included trench foot, and trench mouth, a gum infection that came from stress.
Try to help him get healthy.
Do your best to stay away.
Stick with him and try to ignore his symtoms.
You survived deadly disease!
