Angelica's Series of Selfies: A look into my life, values, goals, and interests
University of Rochester Student
Home
As a transfer student from California, I had no idea what to expect when I first set foot on campus at the University of Rochester (UR). Many thoughts and questions crossed my mind. Did I make the right decision? Am I going to succeed? Most importantly, I feared disconnection; I was not sure I would fit in, or find people with similar interests or experiences. This selfie was taken on my very first day of Welcome Week here at the UR. I spent the morning exploring the campus quads, hills, and grass areas when all of a sudden a downpour of rain came out of the sunny blue sky, and I was the least prepared—I did not have an umbrella, or even a jacket. I ran for shelter underneath the closest door frame of a building, and in complete disbelief took this selfie to send to my family, and friends. Soon after, a helpful lady in a golf-cart came to my rescue, and drove me to safety. During the ride, we burst into laughter, picked up a few more helpless souls, and told stories about Rochester’s weather—I had the best time. The rain made me realize that sometimes the most unexpected events could end-up being the greatest, and most memorable moments in life. Thus, when I reflect on my identity as a UR student I think back to my first day; the first moment I felt connected to the environment and community, and realized, even while soaking wet, I made the right decision.

The average amount of time I dedicate to homework per week is 21 hours (3h, per day).
Writer, Communicater, and Creator
As a writer/communicator/creator I am careful and calculated. I strategically choose my words to effectively highlight my arguments, like the way I specifically sought golden-hour lighting to accentuate my features in Selfie 2. I rewrite and edit my work over and over and over again, like the way I retook this photo 10 different times, until everything felt just right—until I felt comfortable with my complexion. In many ways, writing is empowering; I have complete control over the representation of my thoughts and ideas, similarly to the way I have complete control over my representation in selfies; and even though that is empowering, both processes can be rather inauthentic, filtered, and curated, like my glam (makeup) in the photo.

Online Persona: My Instagram Footprint
Home
One of my greatest goals in life is to travel to every country in the world; I want to learn about new cultures, and experience life-changing adventures; I want to scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef, or visit the Great Wall of China to name a couple. I am extremely inspired by travel content on social media platforms, as it reminds me that there is a whole world out there to explore! In many ways, traveling is one of my greatest outlets/escapes, because it offers greater perspective when I feel trapped within the confines of my daily routine as a student. Thus, I tend to use my online platform to share pictures of my time while traveling. In Selfie 3, I am in Belfast, Ireland, where I stayed for a couple of weeks in the Summer of 2022, visiting my boyfriend’s family, and learning more about their traditions, values, and, of course, favorite foods (fish and chips (chips as in fries)). I decided to snap this Selfie while visiting one of their favorite local farms; I wanted to capture the beautiful bright-green grass, dark-green trees, and cloudy blue-sky, along with the two baby Irish sheep. All in all, my online persona is a culmination of all these little moments while traveling where I feel inspired, and want to share my perspective with others.

My True Self
Home

I tend to feel my True Self when I am engaging in the most mundane and mandatory activities, like grocery shopping. My grocery shopping schedule is random, and typically spontaneous, depending on how empty my fridge is, or if I am craving a specific type of dessert, like tomato feta soup. Not only is there something very authentic and genuine about buying food—one of the most basic necessities of life—, but every spontaneous visit exposes one of my true hobbies/motives, enjoyments, or even commitments. For example, if I make a stop at Costco in the late afternoon on Mondays and Thursdays, the general public will likely find me in gym attire, as I probably came from Bloch Fitness Center; or, if it is 10 PM on a school night, one may spot me at my local corner store stocking up on artificial candy (Mamba, Sour Belts, or HiChews) and energy drinks (RedBull, or Gatorade) in none other than my PJ’s, as I sacrifice my sleep to finish studying for Computer Science. Selfie 4 was taken on Friday, January 20 at 12 PM, and I am wearing a comfy black sweatsuit, because after my stop at Trader Joe's, I was headed to my 5 hour-long Alpha Phi Sorority recruitment workshop. Although it is difficult to define my True Self through the lens of a selfie, reflecting on the spontaneity of my visit to grocery stores is one of the most effective methods at visualizing who I am, my priorities, and what makes me unique.

Why I Don't Feel Like Myself
Citations
Sometimes I do not feel like my "True Self". I decided to turn this into data. Every time I did not feel like myself, I colored-in a certain amount of lines that visualized the extent to which I did not feel like myself (the more lines colored, the greater intensity of feeling). In addition, each color corresponds to a general reason for why I did not feel like myself (Key Bank).
Key Bank
Stress (academic, work-related, obligations)
Not sure, just not being myself
Social roles (student, gender, formal/public setting)
Physical (lack of sleep)
