Sulfur PRESENTATION

Despite being odorless most of the time, this presentation still might stink, so I am sorry for your sulfuring.

Sulfur's discovery

Around 2000 BCE, sulfur was discovered by the Chinese. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Asian Indians used sulfur for medicines or gunpowder.
Antoine Lavoisier identified sulfur as a distinct element, not a compound, in 1777 by conducting several extensive experiments.
In 1809, Louis-Joseph Gay-Lussac and Louis-Jacques Thenard established sulfur's elemental nature. However, elemental sulfur was not uncovered until 1867 in Louisiana.

Sulfur's discovery CONT.

In Latin, sulfur's name comes from "sulphur" or "sulphurium," which means "to burn." In Sanskrit, it derives from "sulveri." In Chinese, sulfur was called Shilin Huang but was also known as Torah during ancient times. In the Bible, it is mentioned as "brimstone," meaning "burning sulfur."

Sulfur's Properties

Physical properites

  • Pure sulfur is bright yellow, tasteless, odorless, soft, and brittle.
  • Sulfur's melting point is 115.21° C. Sulfur's boiling point is 444.6° C.
  • Elemental sulfur is not able to dissolve in water and is a poor conductor.
  • It depends on the form of sulfur, but its density is around 2g/cm3.

Sulfur's Properties cont.

Chemical properites

  • Sulfur has extreme reactivity with all of the elements except for gold, platinum, and noble gases.
  • When sulfur burns, it produces a blue flame and a gas, which has a very unpleasant odor.
  • Having been debated, the flash points of sulfur range from 160 to 207° C.
