Types of Symbolism
Symbolism: the words the writer uses to attach a deeper meaning to the story.Types of symbolism:
- Symbol: colours, objects, actions, or names that are used as a symbol for something else.
- Simile: a comparison between two things. Something like or as something else.
- Metaphor: a comparison between two things that refers to something different from the literal meaning. Something is something else.
- Theme: the main message the writer wants you to know or learn after reading the story.
Warm-Up Activity
Write down what type of symbolism it is for each phrase. Which of the following are symbols, similes, metaphors, or themes? 1. She is my rock. 2. I'm so hungry I could eat an elephant. 3. A dove. 4. Love. 5. Black. 6. Time is money. 7. Growing up. 8. Good vs. Evil. 9. He was as sly as a fox. 10. Ali is a walking dictionary.
Reading
- Read Chapter 4 of The Iron Man again.
- Then, answer questions 1-13 of the assignment. Look for the answers in the text. Explain all your answers.
