In the Gospel of Luke 15: 8-10, the parable of the lost coin is a way to emphasize women's equality in the Gospel of Luke, and its connection to women's rights and gender equality of today.

Luke 15:8-10

The parable of the lost coin

Summary

Characters

The parable of the lost coin is about a woman who lost one of her ten silver coins. She kept the other nine in the pouch and started finding the missing coin with a lighted candle. She finally found it after a serious search, and then rejoiced with her friends, telling them how happy she was.

The main character in this parable is the woman who lost her coin and the missing coin. The woman represents Jesus, who will not give up until he finds the lost soul and brings them to the Kingdom of God, and the missing coin represents the lost soul.

What modern message can this passage have for people today?

Why did Luke include this passage in his Gospel?

Luke included this passage in his Gospel to show how Jesus will not give up until he finds the lost soul and brings them back to the Kingdom of God, and to emphasize his thoughts about women and his support for gender equality.

Through the message in this passage, we can see that we should not give up doing what we should do, even if it is difficult, just like Jesus, and/or God, not giving up on finding the lost souls and bringing them back to the Kingdom of God.

Context

Context

The parable of the lost coin is the same or similar to the parable of the lost sheep in the Gospel of Matthew. The literary tool that is used in this passage by Luke is symbolism. By using this, Luke conveys his message through using the woman’s actions. There’re two symbols that can be seen in this passage; to “light the candle” is a symbol of putting forth the power of truth and holiness, and to “sweep the house” represents the action of discovering the coin (or any other object) that seems hidden or lost, which all convey back to Jesus’s action of finding the lost soul and brings them back to the Kingdom of God.

At that time, a silver coin, or drachma, was worth a whole day’s wage. To commoners, especially women who did not have as much standing as the men, the silver coin mattered a lot to their survival, thus highlighting its importance to the woman who lost her coin. The coin also has the image of the King and his subscription, which told us the importance of the person on the coin. It also resembles God and his will.
