CAR Method

C - ContextSet the scene of the situation. Talk about the challenges you faced in order to explain what happened as a result of your actions.

  • What goals were you trying to achieve?
  • What problems or obstacles were preventing the achievement of the goals?

CAR Method

A - ActionWhat did you do in relation to the context? Provide evidence:

  • What were your actions?
  • How did you implement your actions?
  • Why did you decided that course of action?

CAR Method

R - Results Provide evidence of your actions that translate into a well done job performance.

  • State the outcome or result of your action(s).
  • Be thorough & reflective.
  • Describe how the results has a postive influence on the situation, the customer, client, business, and/or yourself.

  • What was the specific job or activity you (&/or group) were to accomplish?
  • What problem were you solving?
  • Who was involved?
  • Where and when did this occure?

A - Action:

  • What steps did you (&/or team) take to complete the job or solve the problem?
  • How did you go about completing the steps?
  • How did you involve or manage others during the process?
  • Why did you take these particculat steps?
  • Did you consider alteratives and what were they?

R - Results / Outcomes

  • Did you accomplish the job the way it was originally defined?
  • What deliverables were used?
  • Was the result an improvement?
  • Did you improve good interpersonal relationships as a result of your actions?
  • What did you learn?
  • What skills did you acquire?
  • How did you grow from this experience?
  • What might you do differently?

STAR

S - Situation Set the scene. In 1-2 sentences, provide a clear picture of the situation you were in with focused concise details of your experience.

STAR

T - Task Provide evidence of your actions that translate into well-done job performance. This is when you make the interviewer know exactly where you fit in.

  • State the outcome or result of your action(s).
  • Be thorough & reflective.
  • Describe how the results have a positive influence on the situation, the customer, the client, the business, and/or yourself.

A - Action Explain what you did.

  • What steps did you take to reach the goal or solve the problem?
Showcase your contribution. Give enough information about exactly what you did.

R - Results Finally, share the results of the action you took.

  • Why did your action matter in the situation?
  • What were the results that you achieved? Can you quantify them?
  • What did you learn?
  • What would you do differently?

You've got this! As long as you are prepared! You can't predict every question, but preparing answers to the most common questions ahead of time will help you feel more confident and less flustered in the interview.
