Urbanization: In industrial countries, less workers were needed for farming & the concentration of production in factories meant people moved to cities.
Mainly Men: Long distance migration (from one region to another) was mostly men, leaving women to take on new tasks at home.
Transportation: Faster & more efficient transportation (railroads & steamships) allowed workers to migrate between regions for work.
It's all good, settle in the 'Hood: When migrants moved to new regions, they settled in ethnic neighborhoods (for cultural familiarity & protection).

Motivation: Some people migrated voluntarily (like guys flocking to gold rushes) while others had little choice (Irish Potato Famine victims, slaves, indentured servants, convicts).
That's not fair: In many societies these immigrants faced discrimination, but the USA & Australia went a step further with Chinese immigrants, making laws to keep them out.
