Guided Notes :

An Adverb

Describes a verb phrase by expressing manner, place, time, degree, or number. It can also describe an adjective or another adverb.

Answers these questions:

When?

How?

Where?

Quick Tip

Many adverbs end in -ly: completely, frequently, firmly, obviously, carefully.Remember that not all words that end in -ly are adverbs (daily news, early appointment, only message), and that not all adverbs must end in -ly (best, now, fast, ever, not).

Examples :

  • She moved quietly. (Tells how)
  • I waited there for an hour. (Tell where)
  • You may leave soon. (Tells when)
  • I called you once. (Tells how many)
  • He sat very still. (Tells how much)

Adverbs of Frequency

usually, always, normally, sometimes, often rarely, never, hardly ever

Example: He often cooks pasta.

Practice
