Reflections on the story

Pinocchio in his many forms

The story of Pinocchio has travelled around the world. The story was originally written by Carlo Collodi, an Italian author, and has been translated roughly 240 times into various languages.

There are also many adaptations of the story. The tale has been turned into various illustrated storybooks, comic books, television series, also different staged theatre productions.

Pinocchio in his many forms

The best-known version of the Pinocchio story is probably the Walt Disney cartoon made into an animated film in 1940. In 2022, Walt Disney produced a new version of this famous classic.

The story

This summary of the story of Pinocchio in based on the original version by Carlo Collodi and on the Walt Disney version.

The story

Geppetto carves out a wooden puppet to keep him company. One night, the Blue Fairy whispers some words into his ear and Pinocchio comes to life. He moves and speaks just like a child! Geppetto can hardly believe his eyes and ears! But it’s not easy, being the dad of a puppet. Pinocchio gets into a lot of mischief. He would rather play around than go to school and decides to run away.

The story

Along the road, Pinocchio encounters a cat and a fox. These two robbers want to injure him so they can steal his things. The Blue Fairy intervenes. When she questions Pinocchio to find out what led him to this, he starts making up all kinds of stories. The Blue Fairy doesn’t believe a word of it, but she forgives him and promises to turn him into a real little boy if he returns to school and stops telling lies. But Pinocchio keeps doing as he pleases and carries on with his adventure. With each new lie, his nose grows longer. A bit further on, he meets the sinister Coachman. Pinocchio climbs into his coach and goes with him to the Land of Toys. Geppetto is devastated by the disappearance of his beloved puppet. He sets off on his boat in search of Pinocchio and gets swallowed up by a passing whale.

The story

In the Land of Toys, Pinocchio plays, sleeps, and eats whenever he wants. What joy! At least, for a time … but what Pinocchio does not know yet, is that without realizing it, he is slowly turning into a donkey to be sold and exploited. When Pinocchio figures out what is happening to him, he runs to sea and is swallowed up by the whale. In the animal’s belly, he is reunited with Geppetto. Pinocchio tells Geppetto about his mishaps. Seeing his father is very upset, Pinocchio then becomes aware of the consequences of his decisions.

The story

Pinocchio and Geppetto are eventually freed from the whale’s belly and go back home. Pinocchio apologizes and promises that from now on, he will always do the best he can, even if that takes effort. Happy to see that Pinocchio has gained some wisdom, the Blue Fairy decides to fulfill her promise and turns Pinocchio into a real little boy.

Charles Gounod was a French composer. Originally, he wrote Marche funèbre d’une marionnette (Funeral March of a Marionette) for piano. Jeux d'enfants opus 22 Georges Bizet

Click on the words in pink for more information!

George Bizet was a French composer. He composed a suite of 12 pieces for piano four hands called Jeux d’enfants (Children’s Games), op. 22. We call it “piano four hands” when two pianists play on the same piano. Listen to the piece La toupie (The Spinning Top). Imagine it spinning at full speed, like those pianists’ fingers moving around the keyboard. In the musical excerpt from La Marche (March) that you will hear at the concert, the trumpet plays solo at times. The trumpet is a wind instrument from the brass family.
Listening to this excerpt, can you picture Geppetto pulling Pinocchio by the hand because Pinocchio won’t stop playing and go to school?
Claude Debussy, Pelléas et Mélisande, Act I: “Interlude”

Click on the words in pink for more information!

Pelléas et Mélisande is an opera by French composer Claude Debussy. In this musical excerpt, we hear the family of bowed strings: violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. Those are the four traditional instruments of this family. There is also a fifth, the lowest of all the bowed strings. It is a very rare instrument called the octobass. There are very few of them in the world and we are fortunate to have three at the Maison symphonique de Montréal.
Listening to this excerpt, can you picture the whale as it swims?
