Articles
The words a, an, and the (articles) function as adjectives because they answer "which one." A and an are used when referring to one in a group. The is used when referring to a specific noun.
Example: I could not complete the assignment without a book on my topic. My mother offered me an orange from the fruit basket. The photographer asked me to hold the flower next to my face.

Adjectives
Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns by answering one of the following questions: Which one? What kind? How many?
Example: As Jonathan entered the room, he smelled the fragrant flowers. The adjective fragrant modifies the noun flowers by telling what kind of flowers they are.
Look Closely
Words that can be used as nouns may function in some sentences as adjectives.
Example: Avery caught her foot on the chair leg and fell to the floor. In this sentence, chair is an adjective which modifies the noun leg.
Examples
- The ship was an English vessel. (what kind)
- This factory is mine. (which one)
- Many people enjoy the annual dinner. (how many, which one)
