What is an ictus?

An ictus is a cardiovascular disease caused by the blockage of a blood vessel in the brain reducing the amount of oxygen that reaches the brain. As a consequence, the nerve cells do not recive the oxygen they need and stop working. This can affect the speech, the movement... depending on the area of ​​the brain affected and depending on the kind of ictus (ischemic or hemorrhagic).

There are some facts that are important when we talk about ictus. It is more frecuent in women, i is hereditary and it normally happens to people over 60.- People also develop an ictus because:

  • they have cardiac hypertension (more than 140/80)
  • they have a cardiac disease (normally people with angina)
  • they smoke or consume drugs and alcohol
  • they have fat on blood
  • they are obese
  • they do not practice any sport

What are the symptoms of an ictus?

Approximately 30% of the patients may have early warning symptoms of short duration called "transient ischemic attacks." Its identification is important, as it can prevent a subsequent ictus. - Some frecuent symptoms are:

  • Loss of strength in the middle of the body (face, arm and leg on the same side)
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Loss of sensation or tingling in one half of the body
  • Sudden loss of vision in one eye
  • Very intense headache
