INVICTUS
BY William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.
The writer lives in a dark place where their soul feels dark and lonely.
The writer is grateful for his strength and serenity despite the darkness that surrounds them.
The writer explains that they write at night because the darkness gives them strength.
In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Looking back on their life, the writer never complained, and they feel motivated to face the future even though he is suffering.
The writer's body hurts, what makes them cry for help. They can't see a chance to survive in the future.
The writer feels pain and sees blood around them after hitting their head in circumstances they cannot explain.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid.
The writer describes the place of horror where they live, afraid of the years that are coming.
The poet decides that in spite of all the tears they cry and all the suffering they face, the future awaits.
The writer finds only pain and tears surviving the horror. They cannot look to the future.
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.
The writer is dying, so they speak about their soul and fate in eternity.
The writer feels that they are facing a challenge and they can be in control of their life.
The writer can't control the course of their life.
