1. Sometimes the representation of the human figure is closely linked to religious beliefs. Figures are drawn with symbolic and exaggerated features. They are intended to represent characteristics such as divinity, evil, humanity, etc.
El guitarrista, Fernando Botero, 1982
Self-portrait as clown, Max Beckmann, 1921
Two women, Leonor Fini, 1939
Los santos Juanes, El Greco, 1607
Pantócrator of San Clemente de Tahull, 12th century
2. When an artist uses disproportion a lot, it can characterise their style. El Greco (1541-1614), for example, painted stylised figures to emphasise the spiritual quality of his paintings.
3. At the start of the 20th century, Expressionist artists began to distort reality in their art. They wanted to show emotional expression. Many figures in this style are represented with distorted proportions. The very large heads that Max Beckmann (1884-1950) painted are a good example.
4. Surrealism also began at the beginning of the last century. Its artists also distorted reality, but in a more imaginative or unrealistic way. For example, the figures by Leonor Fini (1907-1996).
5. Other artists deformed the entire figure, either horizontally, like El guitarista by Fernando Botero (1932), or vertically, such as in the works of Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920).

Some artists want to recreate the proportions they see in real life. Others play with proportion to create an ideal of beauty.
PROPORTION
There are also artists who draw figures using the wrong proportions. This helps to give them greater expression and to communicate a specific message.
