Communication is at the forefront of every social interaction made by humans. Whether using verbal (spoken) communication to talk with a close friend or nonverbal (non-spoken), the methods by which humans communicate can be interpreted in different ways by different cultures. A better understanding of how different cultures partake in social interactions can be achieved through recognizing and appreciating the concept of intercultural communication.

The intercultural communication definition, refers to communications that take place between people of different cultures or backgrounds. It is inclusive of both verbal and nonverbal forms of communication.

For example, an American businessperson may work closely with a peer in Japan via video call, where both the verbal speech and body language of each party can determine how the communication is received individually.

Different cultures communicate in different ways; for instance, one culture may have informal views of communication while others place value on introductions or rituals before a conversation. To not offend the customs of specific international or ethnic cultures, it is important to recognize how certain ideas, beliefs, values, and views within cultures outside of one's own can influence social interaction.

In Japan, Silence is a natural and expected form of non-verbal communication.
