YES, I GOT IT!

NOPE. I AM CONFUSED...

WELL THEN… LET’S GET STARTED!

BEGIN MISSION

TASK ONE: TRUMAN DOCTRINE Watch the video. TAKE NOTES IN YOUR SPY GUIDE.

All the following are TRUE EXCEPT:

American & British political leaders believed democracies would be reliable allies in trade and war

Truman explicitly mentioned the USSR as a threat in his address to Congress

The US feared the Communists would support Communists in the Greek Civil War

The Communist threat was intentionally overstated

yay! YOU ARE CORRECT. TO RECAP:

TASK two: MARSHALL PLAN Watch the video. TAKE NOTES IN YOUR SPY GUIDE.

3 min

All the following are TRUE EXCEPT:

The Marshall Plan failed to improve European economies despite all the investment.

The USSR forbade Poland and Czechoslovakia from receiving Marshall Plan aid.

The US had an ulterior motive of creating markets for the export of American goods.

The Marshall Plan provided over $13 billion in economic aid to European countries.

GREAT! YOU ARE CORRECT. TO RECAP:

The Marshall Plan failed to improve European economies despite all the investment.

THE MARSHALL PLAN DID LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT GROWTH OF THE COUNTRIES THAT RECEIVED AID Within the short period between 1948 and 1952, Europe experienced a dramatic increase in economic production. The hunger and starvation experienced by so many displaced persons after the war decreased significantly. Whether or not, the Marshall Plan alone can be accredited for this achievement is a question that historians may never be fully able to answer. However, the Marshall Plan certainly acted to expedite the developmental process.

The USSR forbade Poland and Czechoslovakia from receiving Marshall Plan aid.

The US had a ulterior motive of creating markets for export of American goods.

The Marshall Plan provided over $13 billion in economic aid to European countries.

TASK THREE: NATO & WARSAW PACT USE THE MAP & TAKE NOTES IN YOUR SPY GUIDE.

WHICH COUNTRY WAS PART OF THE WARSAW PACT?

WEST GERMANY

EAST GERMANY

NONE OF THESE COUNTRIES WERE IN THE WARSAW PACT

GREAT! YOU ARE CORRECT. TO RECAP:

READ ME!

THE WARSAW PACT was comprised of countries considered “satellite states” of the USSR. These countries were also referred to as “buffer states” as they were meant to protect the USSR from future invasion. Winston Churchill said these countries were behind the iron curtain. All these countries were in the Soviet sphere of influence.

TASK FOUR: BERLIN BLOCKADE & AIRLIFT CLICK ON THE FILE FOR YOUR BRIEFING

TASK FOUR: BERLIN BLOCKADE & AIRLIFT READ CAREFULLY. YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO GO BACK. YOU SHOULD TAKE NOTES ON YOUR SPY SHEET

The Berlin Blockade was an attempt in 1948 by the Soviet Union to limit the ability of the United States, Great Britain and France to travel to their sectors of Berlin, which lay within Russian-occupied East Germany. In June 1948, the simmering tensions between the Soviet Union and its former allies in World War II, exploded into a full-blown crisis in the city of Berlin. Alarmed by the new U.S. policy of giving economic aid to Germany and other struggling European nations, as well as efforts by the Western Allies to introduce a single currency to the zones they occupied in Germany and Berlin, the Soviets blocked all rail, road and canal access to the western zones of Berlin. Suddenly, some 2.5 million civilians had no access to food, medicine, fuel, electricity and other basic goods. Eventually, the western powers instituted an airlift that lasted nearly a year and delivered vital supplies and relief to West Berlin. The Berlin Blockade, and the Allied response in the form of the Berlin Airlift, represented the first major conflict of the Cold War.

FUN FACT: Colonel "Hal" Halvorsen was known as the "Berlin Candy Bomber" or "Uncle Wiggly Wings" and gained fame for dropping candy to German children during the Berlin Airlift

VIEW QUESTION

TASK FOUR: BERLIN BLOCKADE & AIRLIFT

ALL THE FOLLOWING ARE TRUE OF THE BERLIN BLOCKADE & AIRLIFT EXCEPT:

The citizens of West Berlin were cut off from food, medicine, fuel and other basic goods.

The USSR blocked all roads and canals into the city, leaving only railroad access.

The USSR decided to block off the city in response to US economic policies.

The Western allies had attempted to introduce a common currency in their zones.

CORRECT! TO RECAP:

Berlin was located in the middle of Soviet-controlled East Germany.

The citizens of West Berlin were cut off from food, medicine, fuel and other basic goods.

THE USSR ALSO BLOCKED RAIL ACCESS: ALL ACCESS TO THE CITY WAS CUT OFF. This is why the only way to supply the city was to implement an airlift. The USSR unceremoniously lifted the blockade in May of 1949. Over 700 planes had been used by the Allies to supply the city over the course of the airlift.

For close to a year, the US & Britain dropped supplies in by plane.

The USSR blocked all roads and canals into the city, leaving only railroad access.

The USSR decided to block off the city in response to US economic policies.

German children went out to meet the planes as sometimes pilots dropped candy and toys.

The Western allies had attempted to introduce a common currency in their zones.

The Blockade represented the first major conflict of the Cold War

TASK FIVE: KOREAN WAR Watch the video. TAKE NOTES IN YOUR SPY GUIDE.

10 min

ALL THE FOLLOWING ARE TRUE OF THE KOREAN WAR EXCEPT:

The Korean War has been called the “forgotten war”

An armistice was signed after 2 years of negotiations but a satisfactory end to the war was never achieved.

UN forces supported South Korea in the War.

Truman wanted China to enter the war so US could fight both Communist powers but MacArthur tried to prevent it.

NICELY DONE! TO RECAP:

THE OPPOSITE WAS ACTUALLY TRUE: MACARTHUR WANTED A FULL OUT WAR BUT TRUMAN WAS HESITANT. In fact, MacArthur wanted to use nuclear weapons against North Korea. Due to this, and other disagreements, he was dismissed by Truman.

This resulted in the U.S. spending six trillion dollars on its nuclear weapons program, building ten thousand nuclear warheads. Although the arms race was meant to increase each state's [19-5-3-21-18-9-20-25], it backfired in several instances. For example, in the 1950s, the Soviets issued nuclear threats against Western allies, including the British and French during the [19-21-5-26] crisis. Tensions rose and consequently culminated in the [3-21-2-1-14 13-9-19-19-9-12-5] Crisis in 1962, which was the closest the world has ever been to nuclear war. This period marks an intense time in history when two countries were racing to stockpile the most deadly weapon in the world: the nuclear bomb
