Sociocultural Theory
People's minds are shaped by how they interact with other people and by the culture in which they live
Major characteristics of Sociocultural Theory
Sociocultural theory can be broken down into three main ideas: (1) Social interaction is important for learning, (2) language is an important tool for learning, and (3) learning happens in the Zone of Proximal Development (Allman, B. 2018).
Major theorists for Sociocultural Theory
A Russian psychologist Vygotsky (1978), and the originator of sociocultural theory, believed that social and cultural interaction is the source of human development and learning (Allman, B. 2018).
Role of memory for Sociocultural Theory
Children learn how to remember and retain that information from making connections to past and new experiences from supportive adult or peer conversations with partners.

Connectivism Theory
Learning through networking and technology
Major characteristics of Connectivism
Connectivism is a relatively new learning theory that proposes that students combine their thoughts, theories, and general knowledge in a useful way. It recognizes that technology is an important part of the learning process and that our constant connectivity allows us to make choices about our learning.
Major theorists of Connectivism Theory
According to 360Learning, The founders of connectivism, George Siemens (in 2004) and Stephen Downes (in 2005), stated that connectivism begins when an individual turns to digital technology to solve a problem.
Learning is now portable and technology has opened new ways to gain problem solving skills and learn more information
Role of memory on Connectivism Theory
- With the move towards "A digital age" people store information differently now
- As people learn new information from technology or even share information others can take that gained information, have conversations, meetings, networking, and recall it. If they need to they can reference it again because digital information never erases
Types of learning best explained for Connectivism

- Facebook, Youtube, TIKTOKS, and other social media
Adult Learning Theory
Adults and childern need to understand the why and the how
Major characteristics of Adult Learning Theory
1. Sense of self: As a person grows up, their self-image changes from dependent to independent. 2. Adult Learner Experience: Experience can be used to learn more as a person ages. 3.Readiness to Learn: As a person gets older, readiness to learn focuses more on growing up in social roles. 4. Preparing to learn: As people age, their view of time shifts from using knowledge later to using it now. Thus, learning shifts from subject to problem. 5.The Drive to Learn: Older people want to learn from within. (Pappas, 2013)
Major theorists for Adult Learning Theory
- Adult learning theories can be traced back to adult educator Malcolm Knowles, who developed the concept of andragogy. The art and science of teaching adults is known as andragogy. This is distinguishable from pedagogy, which is the practice of educating children (Fairbanks, 2021).
Role of memory in Adult Learning Theory
Memory is made up of three parts: understanding, storing, and retrieving. As people get older, they have more worries, which can lead to memory loss and trouble finding things (Munoz, 2010).
