These are the 4 topics you can write about for the essay or PowerPoint!

The New World- dystopian society

What does it take to survive in the games?

  • 3 Survival All tributes possess a number of unique skills that help (or sometimes harm) them in the arena. Katniss is skilled with a bow, knows how to hunt, and has a lot of knowledge about plants. Peeta is physically strong, charismatic, and great at camouflaging himself. What skills would you argue are the best for a person to possess in order to survive the arena?
  • 1. The New World The author never states exactly how the new world came to be, but she provides some clues that have inspired many different theories. How do you think the setting of Panem came to be? Was it war, natural disasters, or a result of something else that created the new world?

The mentor- Is Haymitch a good one or not?

Could something like this really happen?

4 The Real World The Hunger Games is a fictional story set in the future. Many people believe that something as horrific as the Hunger Games could never happen in the real world. What do you think? Can an event similar to the Hunger Games ever happen in the real world? What might cause something like this to happen, or why could this never happen?

  • 2 The Mentor Throughout the novel, Haymitch struggles with alcoholism. There are times when he proves he can do good for Katniss and Peeta, and there are times when his drinking overcomes him. Would you argue that Haymitch is a good mentor, or do you think he could do a better job?

What must my essay or Powerpoint contain? Look below!

Remember, the purpose is to persuade the reader. Decide how you feel about your topic and create an argument with a claim. Include evidence from the novel to back up your main points. Click on the eyeballs to see an example of each assignment!

  • If you choose option A, your argumentative essay must:
· be one page long, double-spaced (typically 3-5 paragraphs) · be in MLA format (Times New Roman, 12 point, double spaced) · include at least one in-text citations using the novel · include a Works Cited page (Collins, Suzanne. The Hunger Games. New York: Scholastic Press, 2008.) This citation can be used and the page number of the book can be added
  • If creating a PowerPoint chose one of the above topics and use PowerPoint slides to create paragraphs.
· Pictures may also be added. · Follow the same basic directions. · You do not have to use MLA format in PowerPoint.
