Developmentally Appropriate Instruction
When deisgning a lesson plan focusing on differentitaion, it is imperative to consider students strengths, needs and interests. Instructional strategies used for the opinon writing lesson: Hand-Up-Pair-Up, sentence frames, visuals, Flip techology and an end of lesson assessment to demonstrate knowledge on topic Each of these activities engage ELL and special needs students through oral communication and scaffolding in writing; auditory/visual learners by sharing their opinion paper via Flip; kinesthetic learners through movement The differentiated levels of scaffolding will provide all students with the confidence they need in order to feel successful within writing. This confidence will allow students to advance and accelerate in their learning by feeling safe enough to take risks.
Using Assessment Data
When differentiating instruction, using interpreted assessment data can be extremely beneficial. Assessment data allows educators to analyze student mastery of a lesson or skill, which in turn allows us to identify learning gaps, determine future instruction- whether that be reteaching or enrichment and even the effectiveness of the lesson (Truckee Meadows Community College, 2023).
Demonstrating Knowledge
The more opportunities students are given to demonstrate their learning, the more we will begin to see student growth (Usher, 2019). This can be achieved by incorporating technology or even projects. Examples: Technology: Google Slide or Canva presentation Project: comic strip, trifold/brochure
+ info
Differentiation is how educators tailor their instruction to best meet the needs of their students, ultimately guiding every learner to the same destination (Tucker, n.d.).
Student's Funds of Knowledge
The funds of knowledge mindset suggests that all students have knowledge assets that have been gained through their own authentic life experiences and educators can use these assets to enhance learning in the classroom (Bennett, 2020). Ways to link instruction to students lives:
- Culturally diverse read-aloud stories
- Morning meetings: discuss what students like to do at home or their responsibilities
- Family artifacts that can connect to classroom learning

Technology
Why use technology to differentiate instruction?
Flip
Using technology to help differentiate instruction can save teachers some time by using computer-based formative assessments that use immediate corrective feedback and curated reports; an exmaple resource is Boom Learning (Richards, 2019). Not only is technology in the classroom beneficial for teachers but it also highly engaging and motivating for students.
Flip is a video response platform that allows students to respond to disscussion prompts, classmates, teachers or even to share completed porjects/writing pieces.
