TalkAbroad is an opportunity to talk with a native speaker in the target language (the language you are learning now). Doing so can raise oral proficiency levels and provide exposure to the culture of another country.

How does it work?
You will receive an assignment for class. You will work individually. You will create a TalkAbroad account and purchase credits using a pre-paid code. You will select a conversation partner and make a reservation to speak with them. You will complete the conversation directly through the TalkAbroad website. Your conversation partner will upload the audio recording of the conversation to the TalkAbroad website.

Picking a conversation Partner
All conversation partners have a profile giving a description of the partner. Take some time and read through the partners. Choose a country you interested in, find a partner with similar interests or hobbies, etc. Choosing a partner that matches with you is a great way to have a meaningful experience.

Conversation Guidelines
Make a reservation by selecting a time on the calendar of the partner. Be sure that the reservation is convenient for you. Reservations must be made 36 hours in advance. Reservations may be cancelled up to 12 hours before start time. All conversations are 15 minutes in duration.

Conversations will be completed using video conferencing tools directly through the TalkAbroad website. Upon logging in to your TalkAbroad account, you will be prompted to join the conversation. You can also join by finding the conversation in the calendar on your homepage. Click on the conversation in the calendar and then "Join Conversation".
Use only the target language (Spanish), resist translating to English.

Note: Recording the conversation is done by the conversation partner. You will only need to verify the audio recording was successfully uploaded. To do so, click on your session date in the TalkAbroad calendar available in your account. If there is an audio link, the audio recording has automatically been sent to your instructor. You do NOT need to email your instructor your recording.

After the conversation has been completed, your conversation partner will upload the recording to the TalkAbroad website, generally within 12 hours of the end of the call. After it’s uploaded, you’ll receive an email with a link to provide feedback.

Cancellation Policies
TalkAbroad does not refund when students simply do not attend their conversation. The partners wait 10 minutes for them and are paid for their time.
Students can cancel and reschedule for free any time up to 12 hours prior to the start of their conversation. TalkAbroad sends you an email reminder 24 hours before the scheduled conversation to remind you that you have only 12 hours left to cancel. TalkAbroad does not allow cancellations less than 12 hours in advance out of respect for the conversation partner.
