Introduction
The ethical use of information in written assignments is extremely important. Not only does is reflect a person's integrity, it is mandated by law.
Plagiarism
According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, to "plagerize" means:-to steal or pass off (the words or ideas) of others-to use (another's production) without crediting the source-to commit literary theft-to present as new and original idea or product derived from an existing source In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves stealing someone's work and lying about it.

All of the following are considered plagiarism:
-turning in someone else's work as your own-copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit -failing to put a quotation in quotation marks -giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation -changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit -copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not

Most cases of plagiarism can be avoided, however, by citing sources. Simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed and providing your audience with the information necessary to find that source is usually enough to prevent plagiarism.
What is Copyright?
Copyright is a type of intellectual property that protects original works of authorship as soon as an author fixes the work in a tangible form of expression.

Why Should I Cite My Sources?
"The primary reason to cite your sources is to avoid plagiarism and give proper credit to the original author or creator. Other reasons for citing your sources: - Enables a reader to locate the sources you cited. -Demonstrates the accuracy and reliability of your information. -Shows the amount of research you’ve done. -Strengthens your work by lending outside support to your ideas."

What is a citation?
"A citation identifies for the reader the original source for an idea, information, or image that is referred to in a work. - In the body of a paper, the in-text citation acknowledges the source of information used. -At the end of a paper, the citations are compiled on a References or Works Cited list. A basic citation includes the author, title, and publication information of the source."
