Perspective

A good experience for all.

Try not to embellish what you don't know as fact and limit your personal opinions. Supporting evidence is also helpful if a situation came up that supports a known repeated behavior.

How are we going to aproach a situation keeping in mind that we need to be sensitive to everyone's view point. Try to find a solution that works for everyone.

Remember to look at the big picture of a stiuation. Everyone should be heard. The HF, St, and possibly the school all have their perceptions of an event or situation.

Our goal is for students, families, and schools to have a successful AYP. How can we best spport that goal.

What happened? For how long has it been going on? Can you identify some examples? What changes do you want to see?

What happened? When? For how long? How are his or her grades? How is the relationship of the student with peers and teachers? What changes are needed? What kind of help is available?

What happened? What is bothering you? Why? How do you feel? What can you do to help the situation?

Let the fun start!

Case 1

H.mom calls AC: Jane (her daughter) says that Julia (our student) is rude. Julia constantly has to be reminded to leave her phone downstairs and do her chores. One time Julia came home from school and threw her backpack on the floor, obviously frustrated with my daughter. Also Julia is always slamming doors around the house. This is the kind of stuff I have to deal with, and it is frustrating for my daughter and me.

What we hear from partner at the same time:NPs report that Julia is feeling very sad and is bored with nothing to do at HF home. Her host sister is bossy and unkind to her. Please get in contact with her to provide support.

2 kinds of reports

AC spoke to HM, and here is what is happening:

  • Student is spending all her time in her bedroom and using electronics.
  • Student is not getting along with the host sister. H. sister has offered to do things with our student but our student continues to decline the offers.
  • Last week student got home from school, threw her backpack on the floor, and is slamming doors around the house.
  • The student has to be reminded to do her chores and clean up after herself.
  • Plan of action: Family Meeting - AC spoke to the student about joining more clubs at school and saying yes when offered to do things with H.sister. At home she will show more respect and appreciation by putting down the phone and spending time in common areas. HF and ST talked and will try to communicate more.

  • AC spoke to student and here is her side of things:
  • Student says she struggles at school to make friends and sometimes feels frustrated after school.
  • St doesn't know exactly what is expected of her in regards to chores.
  • Student feels disconnected with the HF, saying everyone is busy and no one has time for her. She also says she is trying to keep up with chores and phone rules but it's hard.
  • Student didn't realize she was slamming doors she says the house is old and sometimes you need to push the door hard to make sure it is closed.
  • Meeting and plan: Student apologized for her lack of communication and wants to put effort into building a better relationship. HF wants to work together to improve relationship and will dedicate time once a week to play games. HF and St have gone over the chore list and wrote down a plan. AC will follow up to make sure goals are being met.

Let's be careful with....

Remember: Having something in writing even in text leaves a permanent trail of what you said. Keep that in mind when texting. Texts from coordinators and administrators are regularly copied by students and sent to their parents. Make sure to keep CHI rules in mind when texting and don't quote DoS regulations unless you are clear on what the regulations are. Remember to always be kind in your texts and in all communication with your students - even when you are upset with their behavior. YOU are their advocate.

Checklist

What's the issue

Talked to HF & other sources?

Talked to student?

Do I have a plan of action?

The issue reported is important and also the plan for resolution.

Details, examples, facts, bullet points.

The HF and school provide valuable information for gaining different perspectives.

Remember you are the student's advocate.

VS

Phone conversation report

Written report

It can be re-read for clarity and gives you a chance to think things through with a clear mind. It will also be there to back us up next time there is an issue.

There is room for many mistakes and misinterpreted messages. If you talk to your APA to report a situation, ALWAYS follow up with a written report.

summary & hand out

Facts are easy to digest

Student should be heard

Write your report

When reports are only given over the phone, there is room for many mistakes; "Without a written report, everything we tell the partner is only hearsay."

Make sure you talk openly with the student. Don't just tell them about the problem from HF or the school. Remember to listen to the student's side.

Facts and bullet points are best

We are the student advocate

Add details and examples.

Be careful with texting.

Details and examples help the agency and NP understand better what happened.

We can be misunderstood and exposed without the full context.

We know not all students are easy, some are more likeable than others. But at the end of the day we need to support and guide ALL students to success.
