Learning Theories
How can understanding the human mind help our students learn? "Psychology provides a basis for understanding the teaching and learning process" (Orenstein et al., 2016)
TYPES OF LEARNING
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS
Conditional learning through elicting a response through stimuliClassical Conditioning.
Operant Conditioning.
Observational Learning.
"(1) behavior was influenced by conditions of learning; (2) learners’ attitudes and abilities could improve over time through proper stimuli; (3) instructional experiences could be designed and controlled; and (4) it was important to select stimuli and learning experiences that were integrated, consistent, and mutually reinforcing" (Orenstein, 2016).
Behaviorism
Developed by Edward ThorndikeLearning occurs through habit formation. Knowledge is the accumulation of stimulus response association while teaching should enhance connections
HOW LEARNING OCCURS
ROLE OF MEMEORY
Students learn through observation of the behaviors of those around them. The key to learning is through repetition and reinforcement
Practice alone does not strengthen the memory of the learner. Instead, "The idea was to develop content or methods that led to generalizations and that had wide transfer value" (Orenstein, 2016)
TYPES OF LEARNING
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS
Multiple Intelligences(1) verbal/linguistic, (2) logical/mathematic, (3) visual/spatial, (4) bodily/kinesthetic, (5) musical/rhythmic, (6) interpersonal, (7) intrapersonal, (8) naturalistic, and (9) existential. (Orenstein, 2016)
Focus on:
- how the individaul processes information.
- how their thinking is monitored and managed
- result of their thinking
Cognitivism
HOW LEARNING OCCURS
ROLE OF MEMORY
Montessori Method: inlcudes a rich "variety of visual and auditory inputs" (Orenstein, 2016). Assimilation: The incorporation of new experiences into existing ones.
There are two types of memory: Short term and long term memory
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS
TYPES OF LEARNING
"The learner builds upon his or her previous experience and understanding to "construct" a new understanding" (Fairbanks, 2021).
Cognitive constructivism.
Social constructivism.
Radical constructivism.
Constructivism
students learn new information by building upon — or in other words, constructing — knowledge they’ve already gained.
HOW LEARNING OCCURS
ROLE OF MEMORY
students learn new information by building upon — or in other words, constructing — knowledge they’ve already gained.
"The passive view of teaching views the learner as ‘an empty vessel’ to be filled with knowledge," (Fairbanks, 2021).
