Definition

Hurricanes, every year generated over the warm tropical waters of the oceans, are one of the most destructive meteorological event.Hurricane is a very big thermal machine generated and running by the constant supply of thermal energy, provided by huge humid air available over the tropical seas (warm waters). Hurricanes' characteristic is to generate very strong winds up to 250 km/h. Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are all classified as tropical storms.

Tornado is a sudden and violent meteorological event. In tornado’s epicenter the wind reaches 600 kilometers per hour. The vortex can reach 300 meters hight and moves straight covering an average distance of thirty kilometers, it occurs mainly due to heavy storms. High humidity and air instability are required to begin a tornado. We can define a tornado or whirlwind only when there is a cone or the damages corresponds to this kind of event. Whirlwind is a very intense whirling event like tornado but smaller.

Where do they occur most frequently?

Tornadoes originate and develop in the intertropical belt of the oceans. In the initial phase, tropical cyclones have a vortex of a few tens of km, which then gradually widens up to a maximum of 800/1000 km. They have a duration that in some cases can reach 2/3 weeks, and move relatively slowly at 8/10 knots. The high speed of the air in rotation around the central area gives a high destructive power to these meteorological phenomena, which usually cause damage and victims hitting the coasts. The regions most affected are the Caribbean Sea, where they are called hurricanes, a part of the North Pacific Ocean, where they are called typhoons, and the northern Indian Ocean. The countries most exposed to this risk are those characterized by coastal and densely populated areas such as China, India, the Philippines, Bangladesh.

A hurtricane lasts on average from 5 to 15 minutes, can last even more than an hour. The speed of movement of the tornado is typically between 30 and 100 km/h.

The most destructive tornadoes are generated by supercells, mesocyclonic cumulonimbus of enormous intensity that typically develop in certain geographical areas (particularly in some areas of the United States), where atmospheric conditions are so intense as to generate storms extremely powerful.

The destructiveness of a tornado/ hurricane is according to its duration, speed and intensity of winds.
