Gerund as object or subject

USE:

The gerund acts like a noun in a sentence. We can say:I enjoy tennis. verb + noun I enjoy playing tennis. verb + gerund

We can use the gerund in place of a noun after certain verbs including: enjoy, hate, like, love, start, stop, suggest, finish...

  • infinitive + ing:
e.g. swimming, eating, playing, dreaming...

USE:

The gerund can be the subject of a sentence. It acts like a noun. Reading is good for you.

Start, begin and continue can be followed by the gerund or the to-infinitive.

We use to-infinitive after certain verbs. These verbs include: forget, plan, remember, start, try, want, hope, decide, offer, learn, continue, agree, ask, begin, start.
