Summary

Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg is his actual name but he is more curently called Johannes Gutenberg. Is born between 1393 and 1406 in Mainz and dead the 3 febuary 1468. He was an iventor-craftsman and was known because he introduced the mobile type printing to Europe which facilitate the developpement of the European's ideas and which helped people for the Renaissance revolution.

Beggining of life

He is called Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg but is more curently called Johannes Gutenberg. He is born between 1393 and 1406 in Mainz in a wealthy family of the upper middle class and goldsmith by profession. The family settle in Strasbourg from 1434 to 1444. During this time Johannes Gutenberg was formed as a goldsmith.

He was also formed to chasing (it's like carving on a metal plate) which helped him to invent the mobile type printing. In 1448, he returned to Mainz to borrow money from his cousin, Arnold Gelthus to build a press. After this, he started to think, invent and create the mobile type printing which helped people to write letters more easily and more quickly.

Gutenberg needed money to continue to invest in his mobile type printing and his press. So in 1450, Gutenberg persuaded Johann Fust, a wealthy banker, to help him finance his project and he accepted so they became work parteners. Johann Fust lent him 800 florins (which is equal to exactly 408,34€), a big amount of money for the Middle Ages people. In return, when Gutenberg finished to invent the mobile type printing we needed to cede all his press and his tools to Johann.

But Johannes Gutenberg and Johann Fust still needed to earn money to continue to finance their project. They decided to, using the mobile type printing that Gutenberg invented, rewrite the Bible and sell it. They had printed around 180 copies but it hadn't really worked because many haven't been sold.

Repercution and ruin

Johann Fust was upset against Gutenberg because Gutenberg was supposed to receive more money from his new commerce which was printing new copies of the Bible and in which Johann Fust had invest money. Unfortunatly Gutenberg didn't received a lot money. Because of this, Gutenberg didn't had enough money to refund Johann Fust so he just didn't refund him. In 1455, Johann Fust decided to persue Gutenberg in justice to claim the money he had lend him. The lawyers chose that Fust was right and they forced Gutenberg to give to Fust the right amount of money and the his work tools that he had promised to Fust. Gutenberg is ruined !

Gutenberg's revival

In 1459, Gutenberg participate to a new version of the Bible (again). The historians don't know it for sure but it's possible that the Catholicon dictionary in 300 copies in 1460 is from him. In 1465, Gutenberg is finally trusted and encouraged by many people and the society; he gets ennobled. He is also named "gentilhomme" (it's like "good man") by the archbishop, Adolphe II de Nassau. Unfortunatly, 3 years later, Johannes Gutenberg dies the 3 Febuary 1468 in Mainz.

how is he remembered ?

Everybody was feeling sad about his death, thinking back about all the things he had done during his whole life. But also because all his accomplishements and inventions gave people ideas for the cultural revolution during Renaissance.
