DEMOCRACY
In Democratic States powers are divided to avoid one person or group controlling the 3 powers of a State:
LEGISLATIVE POWER
EXECUTIVE POWER
JUDICIAL POWER
It is held by the Government which enforces law and administrates the country.
It is held by the Parliament (Cortes in Spain). This Power allows to pass laws and control the government
It is held by the judges who guarantee the obedience of the law.
Citizens participate in the Government through suffrage or by voting in public elections where they choose their representatives for the new Government. To guarantee democratic elections (so we can talk about a Democracy) this process must met these 3 requirements: 1) Candidates (People or Political parties) shall have freedom to express their ideals without any censorship. 2) Election must be held periodically. 3) All people shall obey and respect the law (specially the Constitution).
FALSE DEMOCRACY
Similar to dictatorships are the so-called FALSE DEMOCRACIES where they call themselves Democracies but in practical terms they are undercover dictatorships. They have an electoral process where only the governing party can run or, if more parties can run, they fix the results. These is the case of Russia or Venezuela.
DICTATORSHIP
All powers of the State are held by the same person or group of people who took the power through violence by a coup d'ètat or a revolution. This is why citizens do not participate in Government. The Government controls any opposition to the system through repression. This is the case of many African countries or the case of of North Korea.
