DEMOCRACY

In Democratic States powers are divided to avoid one person or group controlling the 3 powers of a State:

LEGISLATIVE POWER

EXECUTIVE POWER

JUDICIAL POWER

It is held by the Government which enforces law and administrates the country.

It is held by the Parliament (Cortes in Spain). This Power allows to pass laws and control the government

It is held by the judges who guarantee the obedience of the law.

Citizens participate in the Government through suffrage or by voting in public elections where they choose their representatives for the new Government. To guarantee democratic elections (so we can talk about a Democracy) this process must met these 3 requirements: 1) Candidates (People or Political parties) shall have freedom to express their ideals without any censorship. 2) Election must be held periodically. 3) All people shall obey and respect the law (specially the Constitution).

FALSE DEMOCRACY

Similar to dictatorships are the so-called FALSE DEMOCRACIES where they call themselves Democracies but in practical terms they are undercover dictatorships. They have an electoral process where only the governing party can run or, if more parties can run, they fix the results. These is the case of Russia or Venezuela.

DICTATORSHIP

All powers of the State are held by the same person or group of people who took the power through violence by a coup d'ètat or a revolution. This is why citizens do not participate in Government. The Government controls any opposition to the system through repression. This is the case of many African countries or the case of of North Korea.

The King is imposed by force.

The King participates in the government.

PARLIAMENTARY MONARCHY

The King has the title of "Head of State" but does not participate in government although he/she has other functions. This is the case of Spain.

IF RELIGION AND STATE ARE TOGETHER

Theocracy

Secular State

Confessional

Non- Confessional

Secular State (or Lay)

Where religion and State are completely separated. Citizens can profess the religion they want (or none at all). Public institutions can not promote any religious actions.

Confessional

Non- Confessional (ACONFESIONAL)

This is a type of Secular State where certain religions have agreements or advantages from the State. This is the case of Spain where Catholics, Protestants, Muslims and Jewish are considered and have special treatment.

There is an official religion that enjoys privileges. But there is freedom of religion.Ex. UK, Sweden, Denmark ... etc.

Theocracy

There is an official religion and religious books (Bible, Koran…) are the law and religious people (Priests, Imams…) have an enormous political influence. It is forbidden to practice other religions. Ex. Islamic States such as Afghanistan right now.
