Impact of COVID in Schools
- COVID: virus outbreak in China that caused schools to shutdown
- faced many challenges
- racial disparity, discimination against Chinese and Asian American Hate Crimes
- students had to learn from home and teachers had to teach virtually
- single parent families juggled working multiple jobs and monitoring their own child getting online for class
- access to technology, low-income families, internet connectivity issues
- widened the learning gaps in education as it was difficult to learn online, can't be in person
SEL Lessons
COVID outbreak caused teachers and students to stay at home and learn. After being indoors for extended period of time, it leads to many effects that influence students' mental health, social skills, and academics. Some challenges faced include learning gaps, feelings of uncertainty, grief of a loved one, and social relationships with friends and families from being apart for extended time. Socioemotional lessons can help students cope and manage their feelings whether it be stress, anxiety, sadness, or uncertainty. If they are in a good, healthy mood, then they are able to learn.
